Received a dismissal letter? Build the timeline first
The documents, delivery details and dates to collect after receiving a termination notice in Germany.
Preserve the document and delivery details
Keep the original letter and envelope. Write down when it entered your possession, who delivered it and whether anyone witnessed delivery. Do not alter the document with extensive notes; use a separate chronology.
Check the stated end date, whether the letter refers to release from duties, and any instructions about company property. A reason may or may not appear in the letter. Its absence does not, by itself, tell you whether the dismissal is valid.
Make two lists
The first list is factual: contract date, employment start, probation clause, warnings, meetings, works council contact, leave balance and delivery of the letter. The second list is questions: notice period, pay, reference, remaining leave, unemployment registration and whether a claim should be considered.
Do not let an internal discussion consume the deadline
Talking to HR does not necessarily pause a legal filing period. In Germany, a dismissal protection claim is commonly associated with a three-week deadline from receipt of the written dismissal, though the rules and exceptions require individual legal assessment. Contact a qualified lawyer promptly.
Registering as a job seeker with the Agentur für Arbeit may also be time-sensitive. Ask the agency directly what is required in your circumstances.
